Donald Hayes,
last year's
second-place winner, is ready to
go, out of the gate, on Friday.
As Don
continues to play on
Mr. Do!, Frank Lupia (left) and
arcade attendant Chuck Whitby
goof around a bit.
Ryan Moss, the
youngest entrant
from last year, decides to give a
non-contest title a go.
Rick
'Permafrost' Carter, famed
80's gamer, has come out to his first contest event since the 80's.
L-R: Frank,
Donald, and Ryan hang out after an afternoon of gaming, while ref Chuck Whitby
(behind Frank) takes down a score.
Pat Laffaye has
arrived, and gets to work on one of his favorites - Indiana Jones ATTOD.
| Frank gives Q*bert
a workout.
Don tries a
game of Time Pilot '84, while Frank looks on for tips.
A favorite of
his, Rick has a go at Q*bert. He came in second on
this title at the event.
Saturday
morning has arrived, as
has Pat. He again gives Indy a try.
Steve McBlane
has arrived for the weekend, and his nephew is due
to arrive soon after.
A modern-day
title, Crisis Zone, makes its presence felt.
Don plays some Zoo
Keeper, one
of the 3 or so titles he concentrated on the entire time of the tournament.
Bryan Wagner is
now here,
with son Andy (10) in tow.
Rick's back for
the day, and gives
a title brought in for the event, Millipede, his best effort.
Here's a group
shot of the players, and Joe LeVan (far left), who's
the arcade owner, and also a co-organizer of the event (far left).
Andy Wagner
tries his hand at
one of the 13 contest titles.
Another group
shot of tourney contestants shows them all at work.
Frank tries out
one of his favorite contest games, Mr. Do!, while
Bryan plays a little 19XX: TWAD.
Rick plays on Q*bert
again,
while Bryan and Frank, in
rear, continue to play.
Our first NYC
guy, Jimmy Linderman, has arrived. Steve
and Rick (on the phone) watch
him 'own' Pac-Mania.
| Kasey Kehler
(foreground) watches as a mix of contestants (Abdner Ashman at far left, Steve
at far right) and others take on 'classics row'.
Jimmy, now done
with Pac-Mania, joins with Kasey and Steve in watching Joe race on Pole
Position II.
Now that it's
afternoon, things are really cooking, as far as the number
of contestants in
the gameroom.
At left is
Darren Harris (who came in with Abdner from NYC) practicing on Millipede,
while Rick checks
out Donald's play on Zoo Keeper.
Here's a shot
of Abdner's CAGDC world-record one-hour time-limit score on Ms.
Pac-Man - a
fantastic 302,550 points.
While Abdner
was rockin' on
Ms. Pac, Jimmy is clockin' on
Mr. Do! He set the tourney
high, with over 1.7M points.
Jimmy is close
to the end of his
one-hour 1.7M performance,
where he reached scene 86.
Perhaps
inspired by Jimmy, Darren tries out a practice game of 'Do'.
Abdner shows
off the Millipede skills that he was said to possess,
as Jimmy looks on.
| Steve's nephew
Derek, all of 12, has shown up, and gets right to work.
The contestants
attract the
occasional interested arcade
patron, as this one checks
out Pat's Q*bert play.
Steve, who has
this title in his home arcade, gives Indiana Jones a whirl.
Frank (left)
takes a bit of a break,
as contestants mix with a lone
non-contestant (in green shirt).
Ryan takes a
DDR break (see his shirt for the evidence of dancin'),
and tries out Panic Bomber,
which he set the contest high on.
Abdner
continues to get the interest
of Jimmy while gaming on Milli. In the background, my assistant,
Matt, writes on the contest info card.
Technician
Brian Moyer (left) and
Joe work on the malfunctioning
Pole Position II contest title. It
was repaired late in the day.
Darren watches
as Donald plays some Mr. Do!, in this low-flash
shot that reveals the back-lighting
of the marquees.
Another
low-flash shot lets the game screen show on Pac-Mania, as Jimmy stands
next to it.
| Here's the
flash version of the previous shot. Jimmy's got his CE shirt on 2006
shirt on, where he set the wr on Pac-Mania last year.
Playing the
game he played most in the event, Ryan tries to increase
his score on Duck Hunt.
Abdner's
getting a crowd to drink in his abilities on Millipede. Even
Donald Hayes, the dual-wr holder
on the title, has to check things out.
| Darren is back
on Mr. Do!
Matt takes a
break by playing his favorite game - Asteroids.
This low-flash
shot reveals
the screen details.
Chuck and Joe
talk over arcade,
and tournament, matters.
Andy Wagner
plays his favorite tourney title - Bubble Bobble.
Darren
continues his practice on Do. Notice his cross-handed play, dictated
by the 'backwards' controls.
| Bryan tries a
game of Zoo Keeper.
Here's a great
shot of multiple contestants, both playing, and admiring the play of others.
Derek McBlane
plays Duck
Hunt, which was one of
his favorite event titles.
Back to the
front of the arcade, showing contestants playing, or
taking a break from the action.
Joe and Chuck
pose for this pic.
Taking a meal
break from the event
at Arby's are (L-R): Matt, Rick, Steve, and Derek.
Also on meal
break are (L-R)
players Pat and Ryan, plus
Ryan's friend.
Abdner decides
to play a non-contest title - Jr. Pac-Man, on which he holds the
official wr, at 3.3M.
Darren tries
out Time Pilot '84, which he owns the board set for.
Jimmy can't
resist watching
Abdner dominate on Jr.
Pat's back on Q*bert,
while Ryan tries to raise his score on
Panic Bomber.
While Andy gets
ready to shoot on a game of Duck Hunt, dad Bryan (background) tries out
BurgerTime, where he holds the world record.
Jimmy tries
another game of Ms. Pac, while Abdner watches, maybe
to see if he can
pick up any tips.
(L-R): Darren's
back on Mr. Do!, while Andy and Don play on, too.
Abdner's still
watching Jimmy's M.P. skills, as Rick plays to the left.
| Joe and Chuck
admire Brian's prowess on BurgerTime.
Richard Marsh
has arrived, and
gets started by playing Millipede.
Back to Bryan,
who's still
demo-ing his skills on BT.
Looks like
Jimmy has enough skill
to keep Abdner's attention
for quite some time.
The final
contest day (Sunday) has arrived, and Abdner just had to fit in another game
of Jr. Pac-Man. His skill is obvious, looking at the score.
The prize line
shows the whole
array of bonus items in the game.
A non-flash
photo puts a cool glow on Abdner as he continues to
rack up points on Jr. Pac.
Rick Carter has
a go at Ms. Pac.
Don plays yet
another game
of Time Pilot '84.
| The final
non-flash shot in this series features Darren playing the title he holds
dual-wr's on - Indy.
Almost exactly
at noontime, most of the players are back, and back at playing. Uncle
Steve (left) and Pat look at Derek's Q*bert play.
Jimmy takes a
break from
the action by chilling in the
arcade's massage chair.
| Andy gives Panic
Bomber a try.
Here we see a
view of the PB
game screen, as Don plays Duck Hunt in the background.
Derek, the
other preteen in
the tournament, is watched
over by his uncle.
Jimmy's now
decided to give
Pac-Man a whirl, and Abdner
can't resist watching.
After a busy
afternoon, I took time out from tabulating the tourney winners, and shot this
series showing Jimmy 'owning' Mr. Do!.
While the score
indicates just
under 600K, this is really just
under 2.6M points !
Like the score
not showing the first digit, the scene counter also has
cut a digit off - Jimmy's actually reached scene 134 !
Another shot of
the score.
A final photo
showing Jimmy continuing to dominate. At this
point, he's barely past half-way
to his ultimate world-record
CAGDC score !
| Now, let's
check out some shots of Jimmy playing the game, and the gallery of interested
spectators.
Jimmy takes a
momentary break, during a game info screen. Frank Lupia, a Do
lover, checked out a lot of his game play during this wr quest.
Back to work,
with only an
hour and a half to go...
Now that the
results have been calculated, it's time for the awards. Donald Hayes
takes first, and gets
the $150 top prize for his efforts.
Bryan's worked
hard too, and gets the $75 second-place prize from Joe as a result. At
left, I (Mark Alpiger) look on, as the bucks get passed out.
Now it's
Frank's turn. He gets
$25 for 3rd place, which (like
Bryan) is one place higher than
he made at last year's event.
| Here are some
of the contestants, who have gathered for the awards ceremony. I'm
getting ready to present one to Andy Wagner.
Andy is so full
of glee, he doesn't even see me getting ready to
shake his hand.
Now, that's
better. Andy gets
$10 for making the top score on
Bubble Bobble. A mystery
person donated $40 in awards
for top scorers in the tournament.
Here's the
other set of contestants, who are applauding everyone's achievements at the
second edition
of the CAGDC Tournament.
