North American Video Game Challenge

extra information page

Reproduced below is the list of players that were (apparently) invited to participate in the 1985 North American Video Game Challenge (NAVGC).  According to a letter I received from Steve Harris about 1 month before the contest, I had been declared (mainly because of my prowess on Crystal Castles) one of the 50 best players in North America.  Now, that's a nice thought, but it was far from true, in actuality !  Still, because of that declaration, I was invited to participate in the NAVGC, and I naturally assumed that these 50 best players comprised the persons that were invited.  However, the list below shows a total of 72 players, so I'm not sure what the discrepancy is.  No doubt, others were added as the contest grew close.  In any case, these names were printed at the bottom of the back side of the official contest poster, and indicate that both Twin Galaxies, and the Electronic Sports League, Inc. (which I'm not sure ever got off the ground) selected these 72 'nominees'.  Apparently, the nomination was for consideration of 'Player of the Year', and this honor was a part of 'Coronation Day', where the top three players receive recognition.  I don't even remember if these players, and the contest winners, had any correlation, but hope to find out in the future.  I'll also have more on the ESL on a coming web page, and will also scan in the letters I received involving the contest, and possibly the poster too.
