Mega marathons at Challenge Arcade's World Record Weekend

Major props are in order for two marathon gamers at Challenge Arcade's World Record Weekend event in September 2008: Jimmy Linderman crushed Mr. Do! for 18 hours, setting a new TGTS WR of 30,075,000, and Bryan Wagner pushed the Burger Time TGTS record almost out of reach with a fantastic 22-hour 11,512,500 point effort.

100K on THIEF is a good score for no other reson that you played for more than 150 seconds which is what the game was designed for.

20 game plays an hour is what the designers had originally hoped for.  Back in the Day.

You are defeating this design model.

Good for the gamer, bad for the owner.

But few can reach 100,000.

Therefore the owner wins.

Above all this you have a Thief with the Tape that works.

Maybe you can record it to an MP3 format when the tape dies....................

To keep the true nature of the game going.

The cops talk trash on this tape.

You should see Mike Ziara play this game.

Richie,

I don't believe that the option to continue at higher Tempest levels can be turned off.  But I still think it should be a possibility for a tounament game and I'm surprised that it is not.

I am up for adding Tempest as well.. I will discuss it further with Mark.

FYI;
I am always working on adding more titles to my lineup...
I just bought a working boardset to get my Tapper back up and running
I am going to look at a Pac Mania this weekend..
and I finally found a Journey... now if I can just scrape up the loot

Thanks for all the posts, guys.  I'll respond to a few of them later, but... for now, I'm announcing that the ability to sign-up for The 2009 CAGDC Tourney is ready !  I posted the updated web page mid-afternoon (3 PM) today, and shortly after, e-mailed past tourney entrants, so they'd have 'first crack' (tho everyone was told in this thread to expect registration to open this afternoon, so things were pretty fair for everybody).  Actually, someone who wasn't a past contestant was the first to sign up - Graham Ogilvie.  He's picked Pole Position to be in the tourney, and I know that'll make Richie happy !  Thanks for checking the page on your own, Graham !

OK - on to the info you want - click here to sign up for the upcoming 2009 edition of the tourney, and get the bonus of being able to pick a game title (from this list) to be in the event !  Keep in mind that you must be one of the first five people to sign up, to qualify for the bonus of a free pick on a game title.  After five sign-ups have occurred, there will be four more 'spots' for entrants to choose a game to appear in the event, but it will cost $10 for that privilege !  So... sign up ASAP !

Again, for all the info on the event, click here for the main page.  The tourney dates will likely be set by year's end, but right now it's going to be either the weekend of March 14th, or March 21st, 2009.  I'll have a poll up on this very, very soon...

We've got a record amount of prize money available ($400), and we'll also have more contestants than any previous year, so this is one tournament to be sure to come out to, especially with the convenient location in central New Jersey.  I look forward to seeing everyone there, and let's make this the biggest and best contest ever !

100k is a good score.  there have not been very many gamers who have gotten over 100k.

whether it's in the contest or not and whether Mike makes it there or not I can set a decent score on it just for the event.  :D
man, I'll have to practice it in mame a few times first.  hehe

make a backup of that 8track....copy to cassette tape even and then if/when the 8-track totally dies you can replace it with cassette and tape to have it.
...although does the game switch to another track on the change of the level?  if so...that won't work with the cassette....might be able to get lucky and find someone with 8-track recorder...then I suggest you make 3-4 copies of that.  Tongue

they are RARE to have working like you have it.

Mark,

Are the Robotron and Millipede going to set to 5 men only?
The Karate Champ threshold score seems a little high.

The Karate Champ threshold score seems a little high.

I agree...although many seem a bit more difficult to reach versus previous events...so maybe that is the intention but some of them are jokes.

I also think 75,000 for Millipede is high...many decent gamers likely can't even reach that.  50k suggested

missile command...30k?  perhaps...but not as easy of a threshold versus many of the others.  you only get like 3000 per round so an average gamer will likely have to get through 10-15 rounds to reach 30k as they will lose cities early.  20k suggested

paperboy..40k...not easy at all...must survive several days of the week....but I have little clue what to set this one without playing it some to see how many days you have to get through to amass 40k.

on the flip side...Pole Position 30k...trivial to do..just have to qualify and finish 1 lap of the race.

Unless I've missed them, it would be useful to know the settings on these machines Mark.

I'd also suggest 20k on Missile Command as a more realistic minimum score.

I'm in! This is one that is nearly impossible for me to miss. So add me to the definite list...looking forward to registering.

...

Looking forward to my first CAGDC tourney. We should have a JFK van or something.

Thanks for being the first to register, Graham !  And, I've got you down on the tourney page game table as picking Pole Position, and I've listed you on the attendee info thread as desiring a ride.  PM me the details on the day you want to leave, and your 'borough' location in NYC...

Thief....................

Maybe Zman will come and destroy his record
actually likely there are 1 hour timed games again...but Mike could easily set WR level mark for 1 hour of play given his extreme juking and konging on that game.

Yep, the tourney rules are the same as always - a one hour time limit.  Actually, I noted that in my post, two above yours, Rick !  I'm gonna cure your skim-reader-itis one day !  Wink

Speaking of tourney rules...

Are the Robotron and Millipede going to set to 5 men only?
The Karate Champ threshold score seems a little high.

Unless I've missed them, it would be useful to know the settings on these machines Mark.

I'd also suggest 20k on Missile Command as a more realistic minimum score.

I didn't note the settings on the tourney page originally, but that's now corrected !  Thanks for bringing up this point, Tony !

OK - TG likes to limit play time with settings changes, but problems arise from that, so I decided long ago to limit the time with... a time limit !!  Smirk  Thus, all games (like in all CAGDC events, and on all CAGDC specific scoreboard marks) are at the factory default settings.  And, I personally check every single tourney game to confirm this.  No more wondering, twenty years later, what happened...  Evil Wink

I guess it's been long enough that you forgot about the factory settings in my tournaments, Bryan.  And, of course there will be no TGTS settings in place for a CAGDC event !  Wink  It will be great to have you out for the event again, now that the travel distance is back to a low amount for you !  Smile

As far as the threshold scores, I've taken your advice on MC, Tony (and Rick), and also yours on KC, Bryan.  I also changed Millipede to 50K, Rick, since others expressed similar concerns.  I personally think 50K is very easy, but maybe everyone's trak-ball skillz aren't the best.  But, I do think Paperboy is no biggie, as they can play Hard Way for 3x points.  Just finishing one day is almost enough, and newbies should be able to do it after 5 plays.

Well, thanks for the input you guys, and from others (both in this thread, and over the phone).  We'll be tweaking the thresholds more as time goes on, but they should be pretty much set in the next couple of weeks.  Keep in mind (as I think someone noticed) that I've made the threshold scores more difficult than in the past.  The reason is that we'll be busier than ever this year, because of increased attendance, and so to avoid refs being so busy that we're unable to keep up with writing down scores, I raised the 'expectations' for this event a bit...

Doesn't this arcade also have Tempest?  The high score list from Richie Knucklez' web site lists a score for that game.

Yep - Richie has a Tempest, Richard, as he chimed in on.  It was my decision to put it out of consideration, at least as far as the initial potential game list goes.  It may, however, be a possible 'Mystery Title' that gets put in come tourney time.

The reason I don't like it as a tourney game is that (of course) if it's an early ROM, there's tons of 'cheats' that can be done.  And, even if it's not, this is going to be the busiest event ever (triple+ the number of entrants), and I sure don't want to have to look out for people 'accidentally' continuing their (or another gamer's) high-level game.  Just an FYI, also - I know of one gamer who (according to a trusted TG ref who confided with me) improperly continued the game at the 2002 event.  Yep - they cheated...  Fortunately, it's no one who has attended my events.  Angel

I see that you suggest players to play as the "2nd" player. If this is the case the players should get the extra couple of seconds per man to make up for the killing of player 1 (if the couple or few seconds mean anything), otherwise the second player would be playing for less than 1 hr.

True, Jimmy, but it's one of those things that just has to be dealt with, as is.  And, everyone who does it will get the same amount of time (one hour, and not a deci-second more  Wink), so they're on the same playing field...  If I 'guessed' as to the extra seconds that are lost, it might be inaccurate, plus I'd have to remember to time the extra seconds (easily forgotten when I'm not doing the extra time for the other games).

OK - final thots, for now.  Pat Laffaye has also signed up for the event (in addition to Graham), and Donald Hayes will be signing up this week.  In New Jersey, Richie had a blizzard Friday, so his 'group' didn't get a chance to sign up.  When they do next Friday, I expect a 'flood' of entrants !  In any case, keep the sign-ups coming in from our end, and don't forget to hurry, as I'll be mailing out an e-mail announcement today to my entire address list, so the 'free game choice' spots will be gone in a day or two.  Sign up now to get in on the 'early bird' special, and save $10 (from getting the free choice !).  Thanks, everybody !

Alright - the end of 2008 seems like a good time for a few updates.  We've now set the date of the tournament, which will be:

Saturday, March 14th, 2009 / Sunday March 15th, 2009

The Friday evening beforehand (the 13th) will be an open session at the arcade for practice (no scores taken for the tourney), for paid entrants, from 6 to 10 PM.

We have nine sign-ups to date (well ahead of past years !), and with months to go, I'm sure we'll reach the minimum necessary to totally lock in the event, which is 30 entrants (on or before February 10th).  As always, please wait until we're 100% sure to book any travel or lodging that you can't get a full refund on.  However, since most people will drive in, plus I imagine we'll have a hotel 'deal' where you can book a room, but cancel within a week, there shouldn't be an issue for anyone.  BTW, I'll be working the hotels next week, for a 'deal'.  I already found one (about $80 a night at Ramada !), but think it may expire before the event, which I'll check into.

There's still one 'free' game choice spot open on 'my end' for early entrants, but that will expire on January 15th, so anyone who is going to sign up soon (and I know of at least 4 or 5 who told me they would in January), try to do so ASAP, in order to get the chance to pick a title to appear in the event before this privilege is an option that will cost $10.  Hey, free is a lot better !!

Well, I can't think of anything else for now, except the two links I have below, to tourney-related things.  Thanks for your great response so far, everyone, and for those who will be signing up, thanks in advance for doing so at your earliest opportunity !
