Thanks for the note, Steve.  I was only aware of the Chasing Ghosts docufilm, which TG has a press release on.

Your attachment didn't seem to work, but, I found this link to the page on the Slamdance Film Festival site.  I also found this (after searching forever) on their web site: "the Slamdance Film Festival will run concurrently with the Sundance Film Festival, January 18-27, 2007 in Park City, Utah".  So, it's one of those 'add-on' events that rides on the coat-tails of another.  Nothing against that - it sounds like a nice opportunity for films / filmmakers that look outside of Sundance to make their presentation.

I've dealt with, and been interviewed, by the filmmakers (Ed Cunningham and Seth Gordon), and I imagine this is a very entertaining production.  Too bad very few gamers will be able to see it, unless it's released on video, or sold to cable.  Well, best of luck to Ed and Seth at the festival !

I find it interesting that this is coming out. I have been interviewed by each of the video groups at Funspot over the last couple years. In one case, one that is likely to involve this movie, I was filmed bringing in the package that year that contained the video tape. However they didn't have any releases with them and said they would get one to me later that weekend. They didn't. Each of the other production teams promised that if/when their movies came out, I would receive a copy of it through the mail.

Then again, it's possible I'm not in the video at all. That would be just fine by me. I've heard a number of stories of inappropriate recordings of conversations without the knowledge of those being filmed. I'm all for working with these guys when they are on the up and up but I don't like the back door sneaky crap!

Yeah, I was promised a DVD copy of the various productions too, Greg.  And, in all fairness, I doubt that they've ramped up production enough to start passing any out.  Of course, they're also busy enough that I'd wager we'll only get one if we ask.  But, I could be wrong.

As you say, the issue is if we're even in the production at all.  Also, the extensive interviews made me think that the focus was on general gaming, and not specifically a Billy / DK thing.  So, I wonder if they're going to be putting together another documentary from all the other stuff that they gathered.  And, as you noted, some of that gathering was apparently done 'on the sly' - a definite no-no when it comes to winning friends, and influencing people...

If you are in this vid, you can hold them over a barrel (pun intended) over the lack of a release !  Well, I doubt the money will be pouring in, but, I'd wager that their production is better than 90% of the drivel that will be shown, and I'm not just saying that because of the subject matter.  Even a non-gaming person should find the thrill of the competition, and the fact that gamers from the 80's are still active, interesting to watch.

I did think that the poster was well-done, but they sure pumped-up Walter - he looks ready to rumble !

As always, you're a font of information, and great links, Paul - thanks much.

Now, to the final one, with yours truly.  I'm not sure who posted this, as (unlike YouTube) it strangely seems to be a site with anonymous posters.  As I note in the comments section, "the editing is done in an attempt to make me look silly".  This doesn't bode well for the movie's accuracy, which (unfortunately) I can't comment on for sure, as I haven't seen it yet.  It played last weekend at California Extreme, but I only caught the first few minutes, which (nicely) featured me in two quick clips.  I kind of like the one where I talk about Billy - "He sells his sauce, and he sells himself"...  That kind of sums up Billy rather well.

Anyway, when I see TKoK, I'll give an accurate review, since I personally know most everyone that appears in it, and I also saw a lot of the process, and the interviews.  In other words, it will be an accurate insider's review, unlike all the other reviews you'll read.  In the meantime, anyone who sees the movie, please review / comment on it in this thread !

OK, back to the 'leaked clip' (leaked my ass - it's probably something that will go on the future DVD release, in the 'special features' section).  When I checked a couple of weeks ago, anyone could see the comments section for this clip, but now, that doesn't seem to be the case.  So, I'll copy and past them all in here, for you guys to see, in case you don't want to sign up.  As I say in my comment (the bottom-most one, and I'll note the longest one by far), I expected posters to be much more rude, given the geeky / goofy nature of the clip, due mostly to the editing, and what was featured.  But, make no mistake about it - I am a geek, and a bit of a goofball at times, especially if I am talking on a subject I'm passionate about, like the Atari 'suits' reluctance to put an ending into Crystal Castles.  Strangely, Ed (Cunningham) and Seth (Gordon) filmed that specific segment outside, in the evening, at the Pompano Beach, Florida event in April 2006.  They had a garbage dumpster as the background, and I even noted this to them, but they said the lighting made them shoot things this way.  Now, I wonder if they did it on purpose, to make the scene surreal.  Maybe, maybe not...

Anyway, see what you think after you watch the clip (and, catch the movie too, even tho numerous people indicate it's oftentimes inaccurate, which I tend to believe, partly because of this clip of me !).  For convenience, I've put it just under this paragraph, and then followed that with the comments from the original page, which Paul linked.  I wrap up with a couple of comments at the very end of this post...

Is Marble Hand the 1980s equivalent to the Mario Party Hand that plagued America's youth in the 90's?

Hi everyone - yes, it's the 'real' Mark Alpiger here, from this very video clip. I was unaware of this being available on the Internet, until someone sent me notice. I thot I'd join this web site, and chime in some comments...

First, I expected a lot more people to be rude, but was pleasantly surprised to the contrary. Of course, I knew there would be the usual idiots (hey, I can't resist using that word !!), like the last comment from 'The Brain', and also those from LittleLORDevil and Mikey Broadway. To quote, well, me, from the clip, they have "low brain power".

OK, on to the more reasonable commentators. Not that it's pertinent, or really anyone's business, but I am not a virgin, though I am as close as you can be without being one (if you get the meaning). And, I am decidedly hetero, and not gay, or bi, or into anything other than 'normal' human, adult women (some idiots... well, there I go again... anyway, some idiots would have floated comments about non-humans (like the bear comment) if I hadn't said anything...).

Yes, all my comments are real, I'm not an actor, and I wasn't told what to say in any way. BUT... the editing is done in an attempt to make me look silly, but that's OK too. Keep in mind that similar editing was likely done with others in the completed work, though I can't say for sure, since I've not seen it. In any case, if the entire interview segments were shown, the clips would make more sense, and make me look less silly, and show an overall point that was being made (the one with me inside was close to fair and accurate, mostly as it was cut up and shortened the least). Hey, even with the entire segment, I'd still come across as a bit silly, since most people don't take gaming (especially on the classics from the 80's) as a serious interest, like I do. Still, keep in mind that gaming (on the consoles) is a 9 billion dollar industry, and most males from 8 to 28 play extensively. How foolish are they to play for hours on end, on consoles that cost $500+ and games that cost $50+ ? I averaged just a few dollars (and hours) a week, for a few years, and I didn't play the violent titles, like the endless 'Doom' clones that are out there today.

The glove is very useful, as some have chimed in, and helped avoid my hand turning into hamburger. Trust me - Marble Madness would do it to you. But, indeed, some of the clerks at the sporting goods stores must have chuckled when they saw my arms, as you can tell that I'm very slight. But, while I will very much admit to being (and looking like !) a 'geek' (though I'm not a nerd - there is a difference...), I'll put myself up against anyone over 40, as far as not being an overweight and balding guy, that looks 40-something. As one person noted, I can pass for much younger (from 'clean' living, maybe...).

Well, if you've read this far, kudos. Go see the movie, even tho it may be inaccurate, because, at the very least, you'll get to see how excellent many of the classic arcade games are, compared to the endless, mindless clone garbage that's mostly what's out there for the consoles. I'd say to the game designers of today (and, to again quote myself): "Idiots !!"

OK, I'm back on this post, now.  I often find it humorous (and, pretty sad) that the relative anonymity of the Internet makes so many people turn cruel, or nasty.  Oh well - I got them back, to a degree, and I often find the best route (unlike the one Dwayne has chosen to take on occasion) is to 'confuse them with intelligence', perhaps mixed with a bit of sarcasm and bite from my end, through communication via a well-written post.  Hopefully, I accomplished that, and by the total lack of posts after I made mine, I believe that I did !
