Donkey Kong 3  TGTS / marathon records topped...  twice each !

The recent interest, record-wise, with Donkey Kong hasn't just been limited to that title, and its sequel, Donkey Kong Junior.  Classic gamer George Riley recently acquired a Donkey Kong 3 machine, and in just more than a week's time, broke both the tournament and marathon records, each previously held by Dwayne Richard.

First, on May 22, George took down the tourney title, with 520,300 points (previous record: 473,400).  Then, on May 28, he got the marathon record, scoring 2,781,100 (previous record: 2,583,000).  But, he still pressed on.  Apparently on a roll with the marathon track, he topped that one again, and less than a week after his initial record.  Specifically, on June 3, he cracked the three million barrier, making an incredible 3,087,100 points !  Now, surely George would be satisfied... well, apparently, not !   Perhaps 'thirsty' for even more points, he went another week, and on June 10, he smashed his already lofty tournament mark with a spectacular total of 857,200 !

Big congratulations go out to George for not one, not two, and not even three, but four arcade world records, all set within a 3 week period, and the first being within a couple of days after acquiring the machine.  Now, that's some kind of skill !

I made a 450k Robotron and a 4.34m DigDug that was 19 rounds from the kill screen. Played a little Gravitar and some sprint as well as a few games of Tron. Overall pretty happy with the scores. The DigDug machine was spot on until the last day when I went for the WR. The fire button started to fail midway thru the game costing me a legit shot at upping the record but it was still very enjoyable.

I also set the official 1hr record on DigDug at 2.11m and the TGTS record at 1.34m

The sticks were pretty good on the robotron but all of us seemed to be a bit under our potential. Since being home and working on some techniques John showed me I have made 5 games over 500k and one recorded at 611,275 which I will be submitting today.

Great show!

Rick,

That caberet was a thing of beauty..... Grin  Grin

The sideart, marquee, and bezel are the same as on my full size upright.... the CPO was a bit different, but still very cool.  The joystick was AWESOME.... nothing like a brand new stick, 28 years old but untouched!

I was the only one to beat Walter on the Make Trax Championships.... I think he let me win though, as he wanted to give me a commemorative bottle of hotsauce and a poster of the event.

I disagree, I didn't like those sticks at all  Sad   The right joystick in particular was giving me hella problems, couldn't hit the corners reliably whatsoever. Apparently the sticks on the other cab were even worse from what everyone was saying.

The game owner tried to improve the sticks one evening, but still not perfect.  It's hard for a colletor to know what you guys like in a Robotron.  Can you describe what it is that you like and how we can improve the Robotron that was in play?  I will pass it on to the game owner.

The owner of the machine really tried hard to get the sticks up to par. He was very gracious. They still needed a little tuning but overall were better than a lot of 25 year old joysticks out there. Scott, if you want to give him my number I can help him get them a little better. After messing with mine at home I have a much better understanding of how to properly set them up.
