Steve plays Berzerk at the 2009 CAG Tourney

« on: July 19, 2009, 09:18:30 PM »

Went today for the first time since last year.  A number of the machines seem to have been serviced since then which was good.  They also installed a large screen ultracade sitdown machine where me and some random guy played a few Berzerk games.  He was good and was able to get 17k as his high game.  I think I finished somewhere in the 35k range.

In terms of the machines, the DK stick was a mess, very loose and wonky.  The Paperboy had some very weird graphics issues where some objects would have giant block-like elements to them.  The Turbo cockpit was nice except the gear shift had no knob and the game was set to easy settings.  Galaga was set to TG tournament settings or some facsimile there-of as you started with 5 ships with zero extra lives.  Very fun.

The Robotron played well as did the Sinistar.  The Centipede had trackball issues.  The Tempest played extremely well.  The Kung Fu Master was much improved as I could actually go right this year.  Frogger was in good shape all-around.

Other machines they had that I didn't play were a Pole Position 2 cockpit, a Spy Hunter cockpit, Asteroids, Millipede, Tapper, Q*Bert, Mr.Do, Mr.Do's Castle, Track and Field (with trackball controls), some Pins, Rampage, Punch Out, Ms.Pac and I'm probably forgetting a few.

Overall a pretty good arcade and a good alternative when my wife wants to go to the beach for the day and I can get a milkshake and play some classics for a bit.

Ooooh Frontline!  (Another Taito classic to add to the row possibly!)  Could Alpine Ski be far behind?!?  I love that game

I did my best to rep the RK locals on the Seaside scoreboard I think, feel free to continue the carnage when you go tomorrow buddy.

I told you I stopped by there, Steve!

Spyhunter was overall in great shape, the speakers sounded great and it looked fine. The only real problem with it is a loose accel pedal.  You can only get to about 50% speed.  (Unless it's just how the machine's set, I don't know.

Yes I recall now.  Do you remember if the Ultracade had Zoo Keeper on it or not?  I should have checked.  Would be wild to play that game on that huge screen!

Do they still have the Hercules pinball table by Atari at Flashbacks? I haven't been down there in years. Good to hear the Sinistar is still in good working order.

The regular one by Global VR does (at least the one at a local truckstop has it on it)

Went again this past Saturday.  The wife loves the beach so this is the best compromise.  My scores:

Zoo Keeper: 2.5m or so on the Ultracade.  This was the high score by only about 300k (I beat someone named Ant) so there are a few good ZK players floating around down there.

Millipede: 85k (I started playing this recently and am now getting into it, fun game)

DK:  280k

Sinistar:  100k

Turbo:  75k

Frogger:  55k

I saw a good Robotron player down there.  I quit watching when he broke 1m.

Day ended with a Misto Shake from Rita's Ice.  Vanilla custard w/vanilla ice blended.  woot.

Very good scores Steve! I did not know you could play DK that well!

What settings was Turbo on?

The DK stick there is terrible.  You kind of have to like push it "in" then up to go up.

Pretty sure it was on the easiest one.  I'm happy if I break 5 digits at Richie's, so I imagine this was on super easy.  At least it seemed that way.

Went today for the first time since last year.

Thanks for the topic, and the info, Steve.  I had actually pursued this as a potential CAGDC Tourney location a couple of years ago.  But, I imagine that it's a seasonal place, and not open in March.

If you or Richie have photos, I'd love to put them onsite.  You guys can upload any you may have using this info.

Took another trip down there this past Saturday.  I posted the games list on aurcade.com but figured I'd cross post here as well to update this thread.  All of the previous issues I listed from last year are pretty much still there but a couple are issues that I doubt a seasonal place like this is going to fix (ie: some graphical board issues on Paperboy, gear shift knob on Turbo) if it's remotely playable, with some non-optimal conditions, I imagine it will stay that way.

Spy Hunter Cockpit
Kung Fu Master
Title Fight
The Simpsons
Donkey Kong (joystick issues  -- to go up, I had to "pull" the joystick out like ducking on Super Punch Out then move it up, this makes the 3rd+ elevators more challenging)
Turbo Cockpit (Gear shift missing knob, some video issues)
Pole Position 2 Cockpit
Super Sprint
Rampage
Robotron 2084
Stargate
Sinistar
Mr. Do
Vs. Super Mario Bros
Tempest (not working)
Gyruss
Tapper
Arkanoid
Mr. Do's Castle
Frogger
Line of Fire
Track and Field (trackball version -- I'm fairly quick with a trackball using 2 hands like on Marble so I tried this out.  Got the HS on 100m but couldn't get the hang of using the buttons in conjunction and failed the long jump and gave up after my first game lol)
Tetris
Galaga (not working)
Ms. Pac Man
Cruisin USA (linked but one not working)
Off Road
Space Invaders
Space Invaders Deluxe
Q*Bert
Star Wars
Paperboy (some video issues, controls actually very solid)
Punch Out!!! (not working)
Asteroids
Milipede
Centipede (saw a lady break 100k while her husband struggled mightily)

Was it Track N Field in a legit cabinet? I don't think I've ever heard of a trackball version of TnF.

Yes it was.  I believe later versions were released with the trackballs due to excessive button mashing.
