Press release written by Gary Vincent from Funspot / American Classic Arcade Museum...

================================================

Gamers to Challenge Frogger World Record

In 1998, an episode of the hit television show “Seinfeld” featured the classic arcade game Frogger. One of the show’s main characters, George Costanza, was visiting a childhood restaurant that was closing only to discover his beloved Frogger machine still in place with his initials and high score of 860,630 still on the screen.

For many years, classic arcade game enthusiasts have challenged the reality of this score since the highest known score in 1998 when the episode aired was approximately 200,000 points. Back in the day when the Costanza character allegedly set the record, the actual score was much lower. No one believed the 860,630 point Costanza score could be reached. Since that time two legendary classic arcade game players, Donald Hayes of Salem, NH and Pat Laffaye of Westport, CT have been battling back and forth with the world record on Frogger setting a new record four times in the past four years. In July 2009, Laffaye reclaimed the title with a score of 771,060 set at Richie Knucklez Arcade in Flemington, New Jersey.

On Friday and Saturday November 20th and 21st, Hayes and Laffaye are set to battle side by side at The American Classic Arcade Museum inside Funspot on Route 3 in Weirs Beach, New Hampshire in an attempt to break the legendary Costanza score. The public is welcome to attend. “We’re very excited to host this event,” says Gary Vincent, President of The American Classic Arcade Museum.

The American Classic Arcade Museum was established in 1998 and is a 501c3 non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation, display and play of vintage coin-operated games and features over 250 pre-1987 games. Located inside of Funspot, certified by Guinness as the world’s largest arcade, the museum is open daily at 10am. More information on the museum may be found on their website www.ClassicArcadeMuseum.org

Note there are a couple of factual errors in the press release.  I had pointed them out but unfortunately were not corrected.   Sad

1) Frogger high score in 1998 was 442K, about half of Costanza's mythical mark.
2) I set the current WR in June 2009, but was verified a month later.

I forgot to attach the poster...

FROG OFF!!!  Sounds cool.  Wish I could attend but Florida is too far away...

It would be cool if they could make something like this a streaming web event!

The American Classic Arcade Museum is sponsoring the Frog Off!

2009 Frog Off – Frogger Competition

-   Hosted by the American Classic Museum at Funspot
-   Friday & Saturday, November 20 & 21, 2009

Frog Off at Funspot

Donald Hayes and Pat Laffaye to compete in this Frog Off.

In the 174th episode of Seinfeld, George Costanza discovered he was still the high score holder of the legendary classic video game Frogger. That score was 860,630 and at the time was fictional.

Pat Laffaye and Donald Hayes have a chance to break this mythical score and set a new world record at the 2009 Frog Off. Can it be beaten? Come see for yourself!
on November 20 & 21st, 2009.

Come join the fun!

Wish I could go but I can't get away from work.  I just started playing Frogger a bit seriously at Richie's and got in the 75k range last Friday and I rolled the score over in MAME last night.  I have a ways to go but it's a fun distraction from my other gaming pursuits....and great to play on my keyboard  Smile

Thanks! -- I wish more of you guys could make it up there.  Should be a fun event!   Cool

This will be our second "Frog-off"  We had one a couple of years ago at Challenge Arcade, but both machines were flaking out and no new WR's.   Undecided
