Mark Kiehl takes back Donkey Kong Junior record

On the most contested major classic title of the last few years, Mark Kiehl has once again set a new world record, beating the previous Donkey Kong Junior top score by Steve Wiebe.  Mark made an incredible 1,253,000 points on March 4, 2010, eclipsing Steve's former record of 1,190,400, set just 3 weeks earlier.

The record has changed hands multiple times recently, starting in August 2008 when Ike Hall topped both one million points, and Billy Mitchell's long-standing score from the 80's.  Mark's current score is the second time he's beaten the world record, and it's also the fifth time a new record has appeared, starting with Ike's triumph two summers ago.

Well, it's been 4 years since the first post (by Greg Erway - screen name awesome) on these forums, and the fantastic community that's formed over that time is incredible !  As I write this, the stats page shows 395 members (tho probably about 70 of those are regulars), 28,938 posts (wow - that's right at 20 per day, including the 'lean' first couple of years !!), and (get ready for this), an astounding 3,666,256 forums pages viewed !!  Well, OK, a fair percentage of those were by the search engine spiders, but I imagine that we had close to 2 million 'real' web viewers !

I want to thank everyone who's helped these forums over the years, including Mark Boolman, who faithfully check in with regularity, and helps bring things to my attention, plus all the mods (of course), and also Jon Stoodley, who really kicked things into a higher gear a couple of years ago, with his posting, and enthusiasm.  Of course, there's a lot of other great people, regular posters, etc., but I can't name 'em all, so I threw out a few people off the top of my head.  Apologies if I omitted anyone who was equally deserving.

I think my idea of lots of categories has paid off now that we're getting a significant number of posts.  By not intermixing topics very much, it's easier to locate things of interest, and also 'old' posts that you may be looking for.

I need to keep the news up better, and that's one goal for me this year.  I'll be getting some help from the mods, thru a new category that I'll be creating (for mod eyes only).  I've got a few other 'tweaks' in mind, too.  But, what you've come to know and love will remain - the best gaming forums on the Internet, with fun, and opinions, but enough control in place to make sure things stay on track, and are fair, for everyone (well, at least those that want to follow reasonable rules !).

About the only thing I can ask of you fine forum members is to be sure to alert me and the staff, via the Report to moderator link that's at the lower right-hand corner of every post, when you see a posting that has some sort of issue (mainly a rules violation).  Don't worry - while you're not anonymous, my staff and I won't reveal who reported what.  We'll just deal with the problem.  Thanks to those general forum members who are willing to be 'deputy' mods, by helping in this way...

Well, the main CAGDC website will be having its 6th anniversary next month, and the annual CAGDC Tournament will be at the big 5 year mark, in March, so the celebrations will continue for quite some time in the early part of 2010.  Thanks to everyone for your support of CAGDC, and let's all keep things building, for your benefit !  As always, CAGDC is "Where the PLAYERS come first !", and I mean that !

Does anybody besides Mark think that?

A site that gets 20 posts a day should not have over 50 forums. In all seriousness, if it were not for the "recent posts" list down at the bottom of the main page, I would consider these forums completely unusable. If a thread I want to look at has scrolled off that list I will use the search function before I go trying to look through the list of forums to find it again.

There must have been another expansion that snuck in there.  I thought we were at 30 categories, but it's at 50, wow!

There's still room for consolidation and improvements.   Take a look at Classifieds -- it's listed as both a major topic and a category!!   Grin

Anyway we can show the last 50 posts instead of the last 15???

I just use the "Show unread posts since last visit" link at the top of the main forums page.  A single click will list all threads with activity since your last visit, whether that was 6 weeks ago or 6 seconds ago.  Way easier than relying on the last 15 recent posts list at the bottom of the main forums page, where if you don't check in frequently you will miss things.

I use Firefox as my preferred browser so I just put a shortcut on the toolbar that points to:

http://www.classicarcadegaming.com/forums/index.php?action=unread

A single click gives me everything that has been posted since my last visit.  (This requires that you have a forums account and that you are logged in, though.  Again, Firefox to the rescue -- it logs me in to the forums automatically.)

I disagree with you, Weehawk, I think the split up forums are handy to be able to discuss a specific subject in a specific forum, and easier to find threads you're interested in. And it's not that hard to look at the new posts, I just go into the forums indicating there are new posts in them and look at the threads with new posts. A bit of work, but not that intensive, especially if you check up regularly (which unfortunately I haven't been doing lately)...

Anyway, congratulations to Mark, the mods and every member for doing a "great job" on this forum, discussing interesting stuff (games, what else  Wink) and giving out a lot of information. Without you all I wouldn't be as enthusiastic about classic gaming, wouldn't know as much about it and wouldn't know as many great people!

It's alot easier to use CAGDC's forums than TG's.

Also it would be nice to update the main page. You should post 09 CAGDC contest on the contest page insted of coming to the forums.

You cant go wrong using that method.

I'm sure a lot of posting opportunities are missed by members (especially new members ) because they don't know about that feature...and cant be bothered sifting through all the categories to find new posts.

Maybe a notice should be included with the registration email....or for that matter a notice sent to all members ...something like....

IMPORTANT IMFORMATION

For more efficient use of the forums, use the  "Show unread posts since last visit"  link located at the top left of the page .

Or something like that .

Congrat's to Mark .....and all the members for a great forum.

Happy Birthday indeed  Cool

I agree with Chris about his main searching method. Also, John has a point as well. The forums are really complicated and could do with a 'diet' as far as the categories are concerned.
I think that they would be no less successful if some of the categories were trimmed.

Congrats to CAGDC!  Great forum with great people.  Let's keep it the fun and friendly Gaming forums of the web!

ps. Yeah, too many categories.  Whenever I want to start a new thread it feels a little like Russian roulette hoping my post doesn't get moved to a more appropriate category that I didn't see. Smile

Congrats on reaching 4 years.

I do have to agree with Weehawk...there's really too many categories.  And having a longer recent post list like Pat suggested would be nice too (maybe there's a way to have that configurable by the user? I might like to see 20 but Pat wants to see 50).  Right now, I use the "Show unread posts since last visit" when I actually log in, but the recent post list is useful if I just want to quickly look for anything new.

I find the CAG forums unusable from a wireless device (by Crackberry).  There are way too many categories to browse by category (and it doesn't show you the most recent post timestamp for the categories); using the "recent" action isn't supported if the forums think you're accessing them from a wireless device (it gives you an error message and says it's not supported from a wireless device); and while there is an "unread posts" link, it requires drilling down into each and every post individually and once you drill in it seems pretty random where in the thread it decides to put the focus (almost never where you want it or would expect it).

I only read a couple of the sub-forums on the TG forums so they work fine from my Blackberry.

From a normal browser I exclusively use the "View most recent posts on the forum" link at the bottom and never view things by category.  If I'm looking for something older I'll search for it.  If I'm away for a while or there is a lot of activity and there are new posts older than the 10 pages you get from "View most recent posts on the forum", I just never see them unless there is a thread that comes up in the recent posts and I decide to read back on that thread to see what I missed.

Congrats Mark & the 'regulars',

Always my first check in for CAG news and gossip, even if I've not been much of a poster for the past 3 years Smile

Maybe one day I'll have something worth posting, until then, keep it up!

EXACTLY.......most of the time it's a no brainer about where to post, but sometimes i have found myself scrolling up and down the sections wondering where the hell am i going to post this .

It's easy for Mark because it's his baby, he knows what he meant  ....but sometimes the rest of us are left scratching our heads .

I'm not sure that at this point it would be an easy task to cut the categories down...looks like we're stuck with it ....it'll be OK.
