David Race(s) back to top of the Pac-Man charts

David Race is again on top, as far as the 'time' record on Pac-Man goes.  He beat his previous time of 3:41:22 H:M:S (made 08-11-2009) with a terrific mark of 3:34:08 H:M:S, set 02-11-2010.  The latest score also tops Rick Fothergill's mark of 3:35:43 H:M:S, set 10-14-2009.  Congrats go out to David, and we'll see if anyone can further lower the minutes on this title.

California Extreme 2007 Video Game "High Score" Contest Announcement:

This will be a one day competition on August 11, 2007 with $200.00 in cash
prizes given out. There will be a nominal $3.00 entry fee for the contest.

We had a great time last year so I thought I'd bring back the video game high
score contest again this year to California Extreme (CAX) 2007.

At Last years 2006 High Score Contest I brought from my classics collection
Pac-Mania and Spy Hunter which were a big hit.

See the 2006 CAX Video Game High Score Contest Results:
http://www.classicarcadegaming.com/forums/index.php/topic,182.msg986.html#msg986

This year I will be bringing two different games from my collection in order to
test the different skill-sets of the great players who come to California Extreme
from all over the country.

The 2007 CAX (California Extreme 2007) Video Game contest games from
my collection are the following:

1. Mr. Do!, Manufacturer: Universal, Year: 1982, Genre: Labyrinth/Maze

Mr. Do! Special Note: The setup is with joystick on the right side, button on the left.

2. Berzerk, Manufacturer: Stern, Year: 1980, Genre: Shooter

Berzerk Special Note: The setup is that of the illusive ultra rare Slow Bullets Berzerk chip as seen at Funspot.

3. Mystery Game - Provided by (CAX)

Video Game High Score Contest will on Saturday August 11, 2007

This 2007 contest is for the purpose of bringing back the by-gone days of the
high score arcade era and to enjoy comradare among friends.

Here is the 2006 California Extreme Video Game Contest Poster:

The winner of the 2006 Pac-Mania contest was Tongki Linderman (Jimmy) with a
CAX Pac-Mania high score of 3,733,860 on July 8, 2006. A near perfect pattern
For a score that nobody could believe, unless they had actually seen it!

The winner of the 2006 Spy Hunter contest was none other than (CAX) organizer,
Jon Koolpe (Jonathan Koolpe) with a final Spy Hunter score of 295,875 points.

Both players at the 2006 (CAX) received $50.00 for their first place efforts, in
which a total of $200.00 in contest monies were given out.

Thank you again for everyone’s efforts in making the 2006 CAX High Score Video Game Challenge a success and hopefully we will have a bigger turnout at the
2007 CAX Video Game High Score Event. California Extreme (CAX) 2007

California Extreme is the "Classic Arcade Games Show". In a nutshell, it's an annual
celebration of coin operated pinball machines, video games and other novelties you
once found in game arcades. There are speakers from Atari and other manufacturers
who usually give informative speeches about the by gone arcade era with an inside
look of how the games were made and what drove these programmers to build these
gems. All 400 games are on free play so it's quite a fun time!

California Extreme 2007 Video Game High Score Contest August 11, 2007

California Extreme Video Game High Score Contest 2007 to bring in big names:

Some big names in the Classic Retro Coin-Op World will be at the
CAX High Score Contest and I suspect that you won't believe what
these Renaissance Men can do with a video game once they get going.

"Jimmy" Tongki Linderman - Master of Pac mania and Mr. Do! is flying
in from New York.

Phil Younger - Master of Berzerk Mame is driving in from Whittier, CA
to do some serious hurt on Berzerk Slow Bullets.

Gary Hatt - From the US National Video Game Team of the 1985-1986
Golden Arcade Era will also be there coming from Ontario, CA.

I'll be there as well - Your local Spy Hunter and Frenzy Marathon World
Record Holder, published in both the 1986 and 2007 Guinness Book of World Records.

Mark Alpiger - Master of Crystal Castles will be recording some portions of
the event as he is the coin-op classics historian.

We always have a handful of Master Players at every California Extreme
from the Golden Arcade Era to answer questions and show off their skills.

PS: You really don't want to miss watching these masters in action!

for pacmania at CE 2006...

how many screens/boards was it?

we have had discussions about this before...not sure if that score is from same or different...

I always thought factory was game end at 19...cuz all games I ever played of it were set that way.

I see the MAME dev team has end at 19 as the default...which also implies that was the factory setting as that is what MAME dev tries to set for each and every rom set.

Tommi must have been playing it set at "endless" at CE 2006.

Was tommi's 2.1 million at TG playing only 19 boards?  if so....holy crap!  averaging well over 100k per board..the entire game.  TG settings are to end at 19.

First of all it's Tongki NOT tommi.

Second...since it's MAME, the default settings are probably different.

I never played on MAME. i always played the dedicated machine.

The problem was that at cgexpo 2003 the only change to the settings was that the game ended after round 19.

The default on the arcade machine are as follows:

Pac Man (2,3,4,5) default is 3
Bonus(50000,100000,150000,none) default is 100000
Rank..difficulty(a=easy,b=normal,c=hard,d=very hard) default is c=hard

Great Paul, glad to see you are doing another contest. Last year's was a lot of fun and will do this one as well, even though those are not on my list of games I am very good at. But it's about competing just for the fun of it! See everyone there.

First of all it's Tongki NOT tommi.
sorry Jimmy...not sure why I said Tommi.  My brain is odd nowadays...I have a wedding coming very soon...August 4...mind almost totally on that now.  Tongue  I have looked right at co-workers I know very well the past few days and have stuttered at saying their name.  hehe

Second...since it's MAME, the default settings are probably different.
as I stated above though, the MAME dev team sets the factory settings as the default settings for each ROM set when known....of course, there is the possibility of errors here.

As we have seen with other games, there are different versions of the manual which have different factory settings.

The default on the arcade machine are as follows:

Pac Man (2,3,4,5) default is 3

Your settings above are correct...but you do not include when the game ends.  There is a separate setting for that in the service mode...to end at 7, 19, or endless for pacmania rom set which is the North American version.

Every single game of Pacmania I ever played in arcades...saw at least 4 of them....were all set to end at 19...every single one of them.  I had gotten where I could complete the game...19 boards on a few credits.

Given the variety of places I played this at....I safely assumed this was the factory setting for the game.  Most games in most locations back in the 80s were set to factory settings.  Most arcade managers would not ever change the settings unless they saw the game was being dominated to the point it would hurt the potential revenue from the game.  Pacmania never fell into this as very few can get past the first jungly board stages....so when the game ends matters little here for revenue.

TG also has adapted the end at 19 as the TG settings for this game.  Given you and maybe one other person in the world that have played to 19 or beyond on 1 credit with 3 start men, TG really has no reason to have harder than your given detault settings.

However....note there are a couple rom sets for pacmania.  The Japanese rom sets for games often have different factory settings versus the USA/North America rom set.  It would not surprise me at all of the pacmanij set has endless as the default.

MAME has the defalt for pacmanij as end at 23...cuz as you maybe know if you have played the Japanese rom set, is you have more boards on the first loop...first loop for board sequence is similar to second loop giving you 3 of each type instead of the North American set which gives 2 of each for first loop then 3 for second for a few of the board types.

It is clear you are the pacmania master to score 2.1 million in the end at 19 setting...to average 100k+ per board the entire 19 boards is incredible.  I used to be where I could have 500+k after 5 boards and maybe 600k after 6...but that was it...after that it was mostly just survival.

At a setting of endless, this actually brings players like me into the competition....as I can have quasi-patterns or full patterns to clear tons of boards...to reach the millions of points.  You scoring rate would be higher...but I would have a chance to outlast...although you show with your Mr Do play you can last and last and last yourself.  hehe

It would take an awlful lot of play to get where I could even be close to 2.1 million after 19.  I think where I was playing I would have around 1.2-1.4 million after 19 boards.

Desiree McCrorey will be part of California Extreme's “Video Games
