I work in IT infrastructure (routing, switching, security etc) and we always have these consultants come in and tell us that we need to unconditionally "update the code on our routers and switches every 6 months."

Of course they do.  They're consultants.  They get paid to find fault and recommend changes.  Doesn't matter if there is actually any fault to what you're doing.

I know you know that, but it's mindblowing to me that there are so many highly paid corporate officers, VPs, and Directors who do not understand this very basic reality: to the man with a hammer everything looks like a barrel nail.  The suits with low brain power who run major companies don't trust their own IT pros who work directly for them and therefore have a vested interest in keeping things running safely, securely, reliably, and at low cost, but any diarrhea that flows out of very overpaid outside consultants' mouths is treated like the word of God.  It's one of the many reasons I have no intention of ever doing IT work again if I can help it.

I worked for a consulting firm for a year and the best salesman I ever met was a guy I worked with that wasn't even a salesman.  He was a consultant that sold services because our sales team sucked.  Actually, I knew the guy for several years before I joined the firm.

He once visited a client that needed Oracle consulting services.  We had nobody on staff that knew Oracle.  He told them "yeah, we do that" and the client signed a six digit contract with our firm.

The next week he was off to Oracle training.

The guy was a bit of a d1ck but I respected him because he could sell snow to an Eskimo.  The clients adored him, he gave my department a lot of work (instead of the sales people) and knew all the clients contracts like the back of his hand.  He brought hundreds of thousands of dollars into that firm.

I was recently informed that he left along with some other key players and as a result that firm is in the toilet.  No surprise, actually.

Oracle, aye ?  I know "something" about the database stuff

It's simply unlikely that you can get to do effective work with that after just training - unless you're going on a mountain alone, with hardware, manuals and lots of Internet bandwidth to read available information for six months minimum... and one can only go so far by selling something that they can't deliver.

As per upgrades, whatever systems face Internet and aren't patched will get owned sooner. Some of the patched ones will also get owned later.

Back to topic (sort of) - the TG forums work for me, even though I visit them much less than I do with CAGDC.

So are they down for the count now? Really a bad idea to let a site go down for so long. When a forum goes down for any length of time it often loses active members. The TG forum had very few left to lose.  :-\

"Unfortunately, the tech is on vacation and doesn't have time or ability to connect to upgrade the systems as needed before they are brought back up. He won't be back until Wednesday at the earliest and no one else has access to do work on the server to bring it back up. :/ So we're kinda waiting on him."

It's really bad that they only have one person who is able to do this work. It's been down for what 8 days now? Come on TGI =/

One really bad sign for them is that if you type in Twin Galaxies in the Google search engine their website does not show up anymore.   Of course typing it in the url still works.

That would be me being a goof and not putting Meta tags on the index page because I forgot about them.

It looks like the Twin Galaxies have collided and collapsed into the black hole of GoDaddy free parking.

This really isn't a good sign.

What a shame.

/facepalm

You're overreacting folks.

I had to pull the stuff off my server, change the domain name servers on GoDaddy back to what they were.  Wait for the domain name server change to go into effect then put the host IP address into the a-records.

It takes about an hour for DNS to change, then it takes another hour for the IP address change to go into effect.  If you don't do a lot with DNS, it's not very well known. Years ago it used to take DAYS for DNS to update.  Now it's 2 hours to 48 hours, but for most folks it is instant.

So you see GoDaddy (where the domain is registered) until everything is propogated.

I can say admin side of things is back up and running, as is the scoreboard, but the front end is slow to propogate.

For most people within an hour or two the server should be visible again, for others it may take up to 24 to 48 hours.  You may need to force refresh as well to make sure it is actually pulling the new IP address.  I'm still trying to fix a few things on the end for domain names as the server is configured differently than my personal one.

OK, great to hear.   Just I have never seen that before with any website I have visited.  I thought for a second somehow Twin Galaxies accidently let the domain lapse, but apparently that is not the case.  Good to see that the site is still alive, and kicking!  Grace you are definitely light years more web savy than I, and so I am glad it was just a misinterpretation on my part! :)
