John McAllister tops Asteroids WR set in 1982

'New' gaming sensation John McAllister has added another score to his stable of incredible world records, all made in just over a year.  This time it's an ultra-marathon that spanned almost 58 hours, and garnered him the Asteroids record, breaking the long-standing score of 41,336,440 points set by the late Scott Safran on November 13, 1982.

In a world-exclusive for CAGDC, the game details are that John's (unofficial) final score was 41,838,740 points, and his game lasted 57:46:11 H:M:S, ending at 10:18 PM PT on Monday, April 5, 2010.  This terrific effort is the longest marathon done since 1985, and is also the longest recorded (to media) marathon in the history of our hobby.  Terrific job, John, and good luck adding to your collection of records in the future !

Of the great players of the 80's, I wonder what they are doing now ? Of course we know of a few, because they're right here, but how about the others ?

I think you'll need to name names Jon.

I believe 'JJT' (THE BEST EVER DEFENDER+ STARGATE PLAYER) is still unincarcerated.....

Not sure I'd be on your list, but I can tell you I still play daily... Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and M.A.M.E. occasionally...
I'll also tell anybody that wants to meet me, I'll be at the show in Chicago Saturday...

Welcome to the forums, Tim (McVey) !  A few people have said they'll be at the Chicago event, and one will be taking photos for the site (smile !).  Sorry I can't be there.  I was tempted (Chicago is 'just' a four-hour drive for me), but I'm too busy, and California Extreme is the next weekend, too.

If you get any good pics, feel free to send them along for me to have for my event coverage page.  Have fun, have another 15 minutes of fame (after 44 hours of Nibbler, you deserve it), and if you have anything to add, or corrections to make, on your Nibbler entry here, let me know.

Tuesday, not Wednesday. I started late on Sunday... we were supposed to have started at noon, I overslept... By the time I got to Twin Galaxies, Tom Gault was already playing Q-bert, and Cris Emery (Emory?) was playing Joust. I started at 2 P.M. Sunday afternoon. I broke the billion, and walked away from the machine officially at 10:45 A.M. Tuesday morning...

Don't ever marathon next to a Q-bert player, it messes with your eyes!!!

agreed...nibbler video and audio is bad enough!

BTW, for your marathon...did you put volume of the nibbler way down or even mute it?

No modifications to the machine whatsoever that I am aware of. If you are referring to the sound from M.A.M.E. it's horrible... It's NOT what I recall coming out of the upright... But it has been almost 25 years now... Still as many hours as I put into that game, the M.A.M.E. sound you doesn't seem *right* ya know?

I know what you mean. I remember playing Nibbler back in the day (I recall staying at a campground that had it), and I don't remember that music being like that, but it must have been something similar...It doesn't have a way of shutting it off, like Kangaroo does (which I believe defaults with the music on in MAME, but I've never seen one that had it on in the arcade)

I'll let you know in a few weeks. I'm getting a Nibbler machine from one of the original programmers. I'll have it in mid September.

wow...sweet!

I always wondered if the original designers of these games have a garage/storage with at least 5+ machines in it.  Tongue

I saw a video game tv speical called "Thumb Candy" where they interviewed some of the designers.  Al Alcorn (Pong) had the original Pong and Atari 2600 prototypes plus a Pong upright in his garage.  Ed Logg (Asteroids, Centipede, Gauntlet) had an Asteroids that his wife actually bought before they had met.  His quote when the interviewer asked whether she married him because he designed Asteroids was "No.  I like to think it's because I was a good guy."  Classic!  He also mentioned that he liked Robotron so much that he bought one.
